Woman with Snake

Made in Berlin in 1979, Woman with Snake stages a woman reaching toward a live snake in a glass enclosure, turning temptation into a controlled act of looking.

The animal is present but contained, the woman close enough to touch it and far enough to preserve the tension. Newton uses the glass barrier to structure the scene: desire, danger, curiosity, and restraint are all held in the same frame.

A live snake behind glass in divided Berlin: desire, danger, and distance in one frame.

Set against the backdrop of late-1970s divided Berlin, the image carries more than erotic charge. It becomes an allegory of power and distance, the dangerous object visible, near, and still separated by glass.
