Made in Paris in 1981, Sylvia in My Studio marks the threshold of Newton's Big Nudes, the monumental studio nudes that became some of his most recognized work.
Photographed in Newton's own studio, the image strips away location and narrative to concentrate on the body itself, treated with the directness and scale that defined the series. There is no fashion to hide behind and no street to set the scene; there is only the studio, the light, and the figure. The reduction is the point.
Made at the threshold of the Big Nudes, the studio nude turned monumental.
It belongs to the moment Newton turned from the charged interiors of Private Property toward the formal, frontal authority of the Big Nudes.
