The Romanones
Photographed in Madrid in 1976, The Romanones shows four women of the Romanones family seated around a white table in the garden of the Countess's home. The scene is composed with lawn, hedges, lamps, a reflecting pool, and the formal architecture of the house behind them.
The photograph has a different temperature from the pool and resort images in the collection. It is quieter, more ceremonial, and more inward-looking. Instead of the open drama of coastlines and hotels, Aarons gives us family, title, garden, table, and afternoon.
The image gathers those elements into a single line:
Lineage, garden, table, and afternoon, held in one frame.
The strength of the picture is its composure. The women do not need to perform for the camera. Their presence, the setting, and the symmetry of the garden carry the portrait, turning a private family scene into a study of old-world elegance.
This work is offered as an unframed Open Edition Pigment Print, documented through Getty Images Gallery and connected to the Slim Aarons archive through its Getty Images Archive embossing and Certificate of Authenticity.
