Portofino

Photographed in Portofino in 1985, this image looks toward a cluster of villas built into a wooded headland above the Ligurian water. The houses rise from the cliff in warm ochre and terracotta, surrounded by trees, terraces, stone walls, and deep Mediterranean blue.

Unlike Aarons' poolside portraits, Portofino is almost entirely about place. Human presence is implied through the houses, gardens, balconies, and the small boat drawing a white line across the water, but the photograph does not need a central figure.

The image turns the coastline into a private address:

A coastline can become a portrait when every terrace faces the sea.

What the picture captures is not the whole village, but the feeling of a life held between cliff and water. The villas seem to grow from the headland itself, protected by trees and opened toward the bay.

This work is offered as an unframed Open Edition Pigment Print, documented through Getty Images Gallery and connected to the Slim Aarons archive through its Getty Images Archive embossing and Certificate of Authenticity.
