Pool By The Sea

Photographed in 1969 at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, Pool By The Sea looks across the cliffside terraces above the Mediterranean. White umbrellas spread over the rock, bathers gather around the pool, and boats rest offshore in the distance.

Where Eden-Roc Pool is tighter and more architectural, Pool By The Sea is broader and more social. The elevated view lets the whole resort day unfold at once: umbrellas, loungers, swimmers, cliffs, tables, boats, and open water all held in a single frame.

The picture gives leisure a visible structure:

A resort day has its own architecture: umbrellas, cliff, water, and time.

The image is full of detail, but never feels crowded. The white umbrellas create the rhythm, the pool anchors the scene, and the sea opens the composition outward. It is one of the clearest examples of Aarons turning a social setting into pattern.

This work is offered as an unframed Open Edition Pigment Print, documented through Getty Images Gallery and connected to the Slim Aarons archive through its Getty Images Archive embossing and Certificate of Authenticity.
