Giacomo Montegazza

Photographed on Lake Como in 1983, Giacomo Montegazza shows Giacomo and Stefania Montegazza welcoming guests arriving by boat at their villa, La Cassinella. The house sits close to the water, framed by cypress trees, terracotta rooflines, and the deep blue-green surface of the lake.

The picture is built around arrival. A boat approaches from the water, another rests near the edge, and the villa seems to receive the movement of the lake into its own architecture. The scene feels private before it feels grand, which is part of its power.

The image turns access into atmosphere:

Privacy begins at the waterline.

Aarons often photographed wealth as a social condition, but here it appears as geography. The villa is not separated from the lake. It belongs to it, with steps, trees, gates, boats, and shoreline forming one continuous passage into the life of the house.

This work is offered as an unframed Open Edition Pigment Print, documented through Getty Images Gallery and connected to the Slim Aarons archive through its Getty Images Archive embossing and Certificate of Authenticity.
