Eden-Roc Pool

Photographed in 1976 at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, Eden-Roc Pool looks down toward one of the most recognizable resort settings on the Mediterranean. The pool is set into pale rock above the sea, with terraces, swimmers, and sunlit architecture arranged between stone and water.

The image is not built around a single subject. Its subject is the place itself: the cliff, the hotel, the sea, and the ritual of being there. Aarons lets the figures remain small within the setting, so the viewer reads the whole scene as a complete world of summer leisure.

The picture resolves into a simple idea:

Stone, water, sun, and sea, arranged for the ritual of summer.

What gives the photograph its force is the compression of elements. White rock meets deep blue water, the pool repeats the color of the sea, and the hotel appears above it all like a permanent fixture of the season.

This work is offered as an unframed Open Edition Pigment Print, documented through Getty Images Gallery and connected to the Slim Aarons archive through its Getty Images Archive embossing and Certificate of Authenticity.
