Carlton Hotel
Photographed in Cannes in 1958, Carlton Hotel captures the entrance to one of the Riviera's great social landmarks. Flags hang above the white facade, polished cars line the Croisette, and pedestrians move through the foreground as if the hotel were simply part of the day's ordinary rhythm.
The picture is about arrival. Before the private pools, villas, terraces, and titled families that fill so much of Aarons' work, there is the public threshold: the grand hotel, the street, the curb, the car door, the first impression. Cannes appears here not as fantasy removed from life, but as a place where glamour moves through daylight.
The image gathers its whole mood into a single idea:
The Riviera appears not as a destination, but as an entrance.
