Sie Kommen Dressed
The dressed half of Newton's Sie Kommen diptych presents the same four women advancing toward the camera in tailored couture, fully clothed and fully in command.
The image turns the fashion runway into a declaration of force. Coats, trousers, jackets, and heels become armor, while Newton's studio light strips the scene down to posture, silhouette, and stride. The figures move forward with the same directness as in the nude companion, but here clothing becomes part of the charge.
Newton on the series:
The Naked and the Dressed was probably the most difficult series of pictures I ever produced.
The power of the diptych lies in the comparison. Dressed or nude, the women retain the same authority; Newton's point is not transformation, but equivalence.
