Self Portrait with Model and Wife
Made in Paris in 1981, Self Portrait with Model and Wife is one of Newton's clearest images about authorship: the photographer, the model, and June Newton all present inside the same frame.
Newton photographs a nude model while his wife and collaborator, June Newton, also known as Alice Springs, appears within the scene. The image is not only about the body being photographed; it is about the act of looking, the structure of the studio, and the triangle between photographer, subject, and witness.
The act of photographing folded into the photograph itself.
It is a reflexive Newton photograph, a picture about the making of pictures, and one of the works that turns his own working process into the subject.
