Salvador Dalí I
Photographed in 1973 at Dalí's villa in Cadaqués and published in Playboy's December 1974 issue, this image came out of a commission to render a series of tableaux from the erotic world of the artist's imagination: nude figures, serpents, a giant egg, and Greco-Roman statuary arranged with Dalí's theatrical precision.
Posar spent two weeks in Cadaqués. Working from preliminary conceptual sketches, Dalí staged each scene himself, directing the models and crew while Posar translated the compositions into photographs. Playboy Photo Director Gary Cole later remembered the assignment as one of Posar's most unusual and memorable collaborations.
Asked what the images meant, Dalí answered with characteristic bluntness:
The motivation was money, and the work was equal to the payment.
The remark feels inseparable from the project itself, where spectacle, commerce, desire, and surrealism become part of the same visual language.
In Salvador Dalí I, a nude woman rises from a giant egg entwined with a serpent, flanked by Greco-Roman statuary and bare arms reaching from the foliage behind her. Dalí signed the egg himself, his name and the year 1973 scratched into the surface at its base.
Conceived by Dalí, photographed by Posar, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
