Rue Aubriot
Shot on the Rue Aubriot outside Newton's own Paris residence in 1975, this is the image that fixed the look of modern androgyny: a lone figure on a night street in Yves Saint Laurent's Le Smoking.
The model, Vibeke Knudsen, stands under the streetlight in the tuxedo Saint Laurent had cut for women, hands in pockets, composed and unapproachable. Newton lets the empty street and hard Paris light do the work: elegance with an edge of menace, fashion made cinematic without losing its severity.
Saint Laurent understood exactly what he had made:
For a woman, Le Smoking is an indispensable garment in which she will always feel in style. Fashions fade, style is eternal.
It became one of the defining fashion photographs of the twentieth century, and one of the clearest statements of Newton's power: glamour stripped of softness, gender turned into posture, and the night street used like a stage.
