Playmate Charis Boyle
Published in September/October 2000, Playmate Charis Boyle is a study in line and perspective by Gen Nishino, photographed on a New York City rooftop, one of his favorite settings, beneath a cloud-heavy sky. Nishino turned the gray weather into drama, building the figure into the architecture and sweeping diagonals of the rooftop itself.
Nishino was an accomplished fashion and beauty photographer before joining Playboy, and that training shows in the sophistication of the pose: he shoots low, forces perspective, and uses the surrounding architecture to elongate and frame the body. His subject here is Charis Boyle, a Special Editions model who later became Miss February 2003, photographed early in that public arc.
Nishino described the principle behind the image:
I love graphic lines. They are strong, simple and timeless.
In Playmate Charis Boyle, the model stands with her back to the camera at the edge of a rooftop, arms raised to her blonde hair, in black lace lingerie and black heels. The concrete path and brick parapet run away from her in hard diagonals beneath a turbulent sky. Shot from below, the composition stretches the legs into long vertical lines and sets warm skin against cold storm light, turning a difficult gray day into something cinematic.
Photographed by Nishino, modeled by Boyle, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
