Tina Bockrath
An unpublished image from 1990, Tina Bockrath is a dramatic black-and-white nude by Pompeo Posar, the photographer behind both Salvador Dalí images in this collection and one of the most revered figures in Playboy's history. A four-by-six-foot print of this image once hung at Playboy's Chicago headquarters, giving the work a scale and presence unusual even within the archive.
The image has an unusual provenance. Posar made a series of black-and-white studies of Bockrath during the period of her Playmate shoot, then enlarged several of them to near-billboard scale. Those monumental prints later became part of the environment for color photographs made with Bockrath in front of them. This image preserves the source: Posar's own studio portrait, stripped to light, shadow, and the figure.
Bockrath took her inspiration directly from the magazine's first icon, Marilyn Monroe:
To have that image, that vulnerability, that magic that made men fall all over her.
In Tina Bockrath, she stands nude against a darkened ground, long curling blonde hair catching the light, one hand raised toward her face. The lighting carves the figure out of deep shadow in luminous highlight and dark fall-off, all silver tones and contrast. The image has the scale and gravity of classic Hollywood portraiture rather than a conventional pinup.
Photographed by Posar, modeled by Bockrath, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
