Playmate Heather Carolin
Published in Playboy in April 2002, Playmate Heather Carolin is a lavish, cinematic nude photographed by Stephen Wayda for a Moulin Rouge-themed pictorial. The redheaded Playmate channels the glamour of Nicole Kidman in a sumptuous fin-de-siècle Parisian cabaret built entirely in the studio.
The concept came straight from the cinema. Inspired by the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!, the magazine's photo team built the world around Carolin: a plush red cabaret interior of velvet, rope, feathers, and theatrical light, staged in Playboy's Santa Monica studio. The sets for features like this were the work of John Cranham, who had been designing and dressing Playmate sets for some two decades, each one taking days to build before the camera ever arrived.
West Coast Photo Editor Marilyn Grabowski described the idea behind the image:
Very few Centerfolds have been influenced by movies, but I did think of Moulin Rouge when putting this idea together.
In Playmate Heather Carolin, she sits astride a red velvet cabaret swing, one arm raised to grip the rope above her, the other drawn across her body. Black fishnet stockings, a jeweled choker, loose red hair, and deep crimson lips complete the theatrical styling. Golden light falls across her against a painted backdrop, while rope, velvet, and feathers turn the scene into pure Belle Époque cabaret fantasy.
Photographed by Wayda, modeled by Carolin, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
