Celebrating Centerfolds

Celebrating Centerfolds carries a small mystery within the archive. Published in Playboy in May 2000, the image features Tiffany Sloan, Miss October 1992, photographed by Los Angeles-based fashion and beauty photographer David D'Angelo, yet the accompanying archival text notes that senior editors did not recall the exact circumstances of its making.

That uncertainty gives the work part of its charge. Sloan's story moves from a tomboy childhood outside Las Vegas to beauty contests, performance, and eventually Playboy, where she discovered a different kind of confidence in front of the camera. What survives here is not the full editorial backstory, but the image itself: quiet, dark, and self-contained.

Sloan described the feeling of being seen with unusual directness:

I found out I love performing, having people look at me.

In Celebrating Centerfolds, Sloan lies back across a dark textured ground, her head tipped toward the camera, hair falling behind her, arms extended outward as warm light catches the line of her body. The pose feels suspended between performance and stillness, less a conventional centerfold than a private moment held in shadow.

Photographed by D'Angelo, modeled by Sloan, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
