Playmate Martha Smith

An unpublished Playboy image from July 1973, Playmate Martha Smith is a quiet, painterly nude by Pompeo Posar, the photographer behind both Salvador Dalí images in this collection. Pulled from the archive rather than the magazine's original pages, the work is built from warm light, deep red fabric, fruit, and a classical reclining pose.

Martha Smith was Playboy's July 1973 Playmate and later appeared in film and television, including National Lampoon's Animal House. But the lasting subject here is Posar's craft: luminous skin, controlled shadow, and a composition that feels closer to an old-master study than a conventional glamour photograph.

The image's resemblance to Titian's Danaë gives it a distinctly classical frame. With its reclining figure, rich brocade ground, golden light, and bowl of fruit in the foreground, the photograph turns an unpublished archive outtake into one of the collection's most overtly painterly works.

Playboy Art Curator Aaron Baker placed Posar at the top of the magazine's photographic canon:

Pompeo was the grand master of Playboy photography.

In Playmate Martha Smith, the blonde model reclines across a deep red floral ground, one knee raised, her body turned in warm light against the surrounding shadow. A bowl of ripe fruit sits in the foreground, catching the same glow. The palette is all reds, golds, and skin, the whole image illuminated with the softness of a painted interior.

Photographed by Posar, modeled by Smith, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
