Ladies' Underwear 1922
Published in Playboy in July 1972, Ladies' Underwear 1922 places Claudia Jennings, the magazine's 1970 Playmate of the Year, inside a Jazz Age fantasy of sheer fabric, pearls, marabou, champagne, and theatrical light. Photographed by Frank Laffitte for a feature tracing the history of women's undergarments, the image centers on the shimmy, a shorter, skimpier chemise associated with the 1920s and named for the quivering Jazz Age dance popularized by performer Gilda Gray.
Jennings came to Playboy by an unlikely route, working as a receptionist at the magazine's Chicago offices before photographer Pompeo Posar persuaded her to pose. She became Miss November 1969, Playmate of the Year the following year, and later built a prolific film career that made her known as the Queen of the B's. Laffitte remains one of the archive's quieter mysteries: after this work, Playboy lost track of the photographer, and he never shot for the magazine again.

In Ladies' Underwear 1922, Jennings reclines against a glittering Art Deco backdrop in a sheer cream chemise, strands of pearls falling across the body and white marabou gathered at her shoulders. A champagne coupe and dark bottle sit close at hand, while red nails, jewelry, and soft focus complete the period fantasy. The frame is languid, opulent, and deliberately theatrical.
Photographed by Laffitte, modeled by Jennings, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
