Playmate Shannon Tweed

An unpublished Playboy image from June 1982, Playmate Shannon Tweed presents the 1982 Playmate of the Year inside an elaborate Art Deco fantasy built for Richard Fegley's camera: glossy black surfaces, warm theatrical light, flowers, brass accents, and a dream-apartment set designed around the classic femme fatale.

Tweed's path to Playboy was not immediate. Raised on a mink farm in Newfoundland, she moved through modeling and beauty contests before testing for Playmate several times. After three unsuccessful attempts, the fourth became the charm: she was selected as a Playmate and went on to become 1982 Playmate of the Year.

Fegley described his eye for a picture as something he worked at instinctively:

I have always been very particular about what I cared about: color, position, arrangement.

In Playmate Shannon Tweed, she reclines along the edge of a glossy black bathtub, her body lit in warm gold against the dark set. The lighted floor, Deco details, flowers, and sculptural wall figure turn the scene into something more constructed than domestic: a staged interior of glamour, control, and seduction.

Photographed by Fegley, modeled by Tweed, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
