Playboy's 45th Anniversary Playmate
An unpublished image from January 1999, Playboy's 45th Anniversary Playmate presents Jaime Bergman, the model chosen by Playboy editors to represent the magazine's 45th anniversary. Photographed by Stephen Wayda on a Hidden Valley ranch, the image turns Bergman's real cowgirl background into a warm, cinematic study of Western glamour.
Bergman was a Utah-raised blonde and genuine rodeo competitor, described by the magazine as a small-town beauty with a yen for horses and a roomful of rodeo ribbons. Wayda built the shoot around that biography, using a cowboy hat, bolo tie, ornate belt, ranch setting, and golden light. But this particular frame was not tightly planned. It came from Wayda's habit of reading the location, the model, and the available light in the moment.
Wayda described his way of working:
There's a lot of serendipity to my shootings.
In Playboy's 45th Anniversary Playmate, Bergman stands nude but for a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, bolo tie, and low-slung leather belt with an ornate buckle, holding an old telephone receiver in one hand and a cigar near her lips in the other. Warm light cuts across her body against the dark wood of the ranch setting, giving the image its amber glow and noir Western mood. The styling is spare but unmistakable: rodeo beauty, vintage telephone, deep shadow, and gold light.
Photographed by Wayda, modeled by Bergman, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
