Sheer Madness
Published in Playboy in February 1991, Sheer Madness is a study in line, pose, and restrained color by London photographer Byron Newman. Built around the idea of a mystery woman packing for a glamorous trip, the image turns vintage luggage, black stockings, warm skin, and soft light into a tightly controlled composition.
Newman photographed women for Playboy for more than two decades, bringing a polished, European fashion sensibility to the magazine's glamour language. Here, he keeps the palette deliberately narrow: brown leather, muted interior tones, black hosiery, and the warm gold of the body. The restraint gives the image its elegance, making the pose feel less staged than discovered.
Newman described what he wanted from the image:
I wanted a simple image and an elegant pose where the model was central to the composition.
In Sheer Madness, Szeto bends over a pair of worn leather suitcases, hands reaching toward the latch, long hair falling forward as black stockings and stiletto heels draw the eye along the length of the body. The image is sensual but exacting, every element arranged around the curve of the pose and the quiet geometry of preparation.
Photographed by Newman, modeled by Szeto, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
