Girls of Winter
Published in Playboy in September 1998, Girls of Winter is an outdoor glamour tableau by Gen Nishino, photographed in late fall on Mount Hood, Oregon. Conceived as a winter companion to Playboy's long-running Girls of Summer editions, the image trades beach heat for alpine light: snow, evergreens, ski boots, red jackets, and the fantasy of après-ski glamour.
Nishino was born in Japan and came to the United States at eight, first working as an accomplished San Francisco hairstylist before picking up a camera in 1983 and moving into fashion, beauty, and Playboy photography. The group here includes Kelly Monaco, who later became a daytime television star and the first champion of Dancing with the Stars, photographed at the beginning of that public arc.
Nishino described the approach behind his Playboy work:
My Playboy work is very voyeuristic... I want the models to be themselves and not model.
In Girls of Winter, three women are staged on a snow-covered slope framed by frost-heavy evergreens. Two stand behind in open red ski jackets with poles and boots, while the foreground figure faces the camera in a red trapper hat, white wrist warmers, tall ribbed socks, and snow boots. The reds cut sharply against the white snow and dark treeline, giving the photograph the crispness of a winter lifestyle image pushed into fantasy.
Photographed by Nishino and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
Collection Note
The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
