She's In the Money
Published in Playboy in February 2001, She's In the Money presents Anna Nicole Smith in the old-Hollywood register she had long imagined for herself: soft black-and-white glamour, a languid pose, and the unmistakable lineage of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield.
Raised in Mexia, Texas, Smith grew up idolizing Marilyn Monroe and went on to become one of Playboy's defining figures of the early 1990s: Miss May 1992, 1993 Playmate of the Year, and a voluptuous counterpoint to the waif-like fashion ideal of the period. Her rise carried the force of a self-invented American bombshell, and Guess soon hired her to front the campaign that had belonged to Claudia Schiffer.
Playboy Photo Director Gary Cole placed the image in that lineage:
She really does fit into the legacy of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield.
In She's In the Money, Smith reclines across pale cushions, her body rendered in soft monochrome and diffused light. The pose is relaxed but theatrical, her gaze turned toward the camera with the heavy-lidded assurance of a classic screen siren. Federici's photograph is pure glamour, returning Anna Nicole to the old-Hollywood language she understood best.
Photographed by Federici, modeled by Smith, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
