Kylie Bax
Published in Playboy in March 2001, Kylie Bax is a bondage-themed study of the New Zealand supermodel, photographed by veteran fashion photographer Marco Glaviano. Bax helped shape the concept herself, making it one of the more daring celebrity pictorials of its era.
Bax left New Zealand for New York with little more than ambition, breaking through on a Steven Meisel shoot for Italian Vogue before becoming one of the decade's recognizable supermodels and moving into acting. Glaviano came to photography from architecture, trained at the University of Palermo, and by 2001 had spent more than three decades shaping the visual language of fashion. The result is a pictorial that treats provocation with a fashion photographer's control: less spectacle than sculpture.
Glaviano described his aim as a photographer with unusual simplicity:
My aim simply is to preserve beautiful women.
In Kylie Bax, the body folds sharply forward over a dark leather form, skin oiled and lit warm against deep shadow, long hair falling through the frame, a leather cuff visible at the wrist. The bondage motif is present but restrained, rendered as line, tension, and form rather than display. The face is turned away, leaving the composition to read as pure shape.
Photographed by Glaviano, modeled by Bax, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
Collection Note
The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
