Pussycat Dolls
An unpublished image from June 1999, Pussycat Dolls captures the original burlesque incarnation of the group years before the name became a global pop act. Photographed by Arny Freytag, the image features Robin Antin, founder of the Pussycat Dolls, inside the retro theatrical world she built.
Antin created the Pussycat Dolls as a burlesque troupe in 1995, performing at The Viper Room in Los Angeles with a style drawn from Bettie Page, classic cheesecake, cabaret, and striptease without surrendering to the strip-club vocabulary of the era. The group would later be recast as an R&B pop act, but this image belongs to the earlier world: witty, theatrical, retro, and deliberately staged.
Freytag described the lighting that gives the photograph its mood:
I love the colors and the lack of front light. It creates a nice mood.
In Pussycat Dolls, Antin stands in corset, striped stockings, and boots, one leg lifted over a bentwood chair as a sailor figure appears below her. A circular moonlike light glows behind her outstretched hand, while blue shadow, low footlights, and stage haze turn the scene into a burlesque tableau. The image feels less like a photograph taken backstage than a performance frozen at its most theatrical instant.
Photographed by Freytag, modeled by Antin and Collins, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
