The Adventures of Pam: Cover Girl
Published in Playboy in July 2001, Cover Girl is one of the most self-aware images from The Adventures of Pam, David LaChapelle's surreal pop portrait of Pamela Anderson. Anderson reclines across a mosaic of her own Playboy covers, turning her history with the magazine into the literal surface of the photograph.
The concept folds fame back onto itself. Surrounded by repeating red-and-white Playboy logos and images of her own past appearances, Anderson becomes both subject and archive: the woman in the picture and the mythology beneath it. LaChapelle and Anderson had worked together before, and both understood how to turn celebrity into spectacle without apology.
LaChapelle has been clear about where his images begin:
Style is superficial. They come from an idea.
In Cover Girl, Anderson lies across the tiled field of her covers in white platform heels and a thin gold strap, one hand near her lips as she looks back toward the viewer. The image turns the most photographed woman in Playboy history into a commentary on being exactly that: glamour, repetition, fame, and self-reference collapsed into a single frame.
Photographed by LaChapelle, modeled by Anderson, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
