Thierry Mugler's Sex Couture
Published in Playboy in January 1999, Thierry Mugler's Sex Couture is a high-fashion tableau authored by the French couturier himself. Mugler conceived the feature, found the locations, supplied the clothing, styled the looks, and photographed the models, turning the assignment into a couture world built for the camera.
Mugler was a designer, director, and trained ballet dancer whose work fused fashion, theater, body, and spectacle. For Playboy, he treated the pictorial less as a standard nude feature than as a staged fashion production, controlling every element from wardrobe to composition. Photo Editor Marilyn Grabowski, introduced to Mugler through Helmut Newton, watched him build the image with the command of a designer and the eye of a director.
Grabowski described what it was like to watch him work:
It was really fascinating to watch a genius in action.
In Thierry Mugler's Sex Couture, a group of models is arranged across a bright resort terrace in sharp couture black: wide saucer-brimmed hats, sheer stockings, garters, gloves, pearls, and stiletto heels. One figure reclines with a leg thrown high along a white chaise while the others stand in severe silhouette around her. The scene is theatrical and exacting, all hard styling against bare skin, fashion editorial pushed to the edge of fantasy.
Photographed by Thierry Mugler and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
