The Nude Marilyn II
Before she was Marilyn, she modeled for Earl Moran. Taken around 1946 and published in Playboy in January 1987, The Nude Marilyn II belongs to the early years when Norma Jeane Baker sat for the renowned pinup artist as a young, unknown model, long before the world knew her name.
Between 1946 and 1950, Monroe posed for Moran at roughly ten dollars an hour, with each session lasting about two hours. The photographs were not originally intended as finished portraits. Moran used them as working studies, reference images for the pastel and oil pinups he painted for Brown and Bigelow.
Moran valued not only her movement and form, but her instinct for feeling in front of the camera:
Emotionally, she did everything right.
In The Nude Marilyn II, Monroe reclines across a couch, propped on her elbows, bare from the waist up, her legs extended behind her as she turns back toward the camera with an open, unguarded smile. The image feels less like a formal portrait than a working study caught in motion: playful, informal, and alive to Moran's eye.
Photographed by Moran, modeled by Monroe, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
