Stephanie's Secret

Published in Playboy in February 1993, Stephanie's Secret captures Stephanie Seymour at the height of the supermodel era, photographed by renowned fashion and celebrity portraitist Sante D'Orazio. The image ran on the cover of that issue, and it carries the lush, saturated glamour of a classic pinup.

Seymour was one of the defining faces of the early 1990s, the moment when the public knew its models on a first-name basis. Through Victoria's Secret and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, she became a household presence. Here, D'Orazio renders that fame in a deeper, more romantic register: crimson backdrop, sheer fabric, theatrical light, and a gaze held directly at the camera.

Seymour described the feeling in the pictures with unusual clarity:

For me the feeling in these pictures is freedom and strength.

In Stephanie's Secret, she stands against saturated red, draped in sheer fabric that falls open the length of her body, her hair swept back and her posture held with total control. The image has the structure of a classic pinup, but the attitude is unmistakably supermodel-era: self-possessed, polished, and commanding.

Photographed by D'Orazio, modeled by Seymour, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
