The Big Bunny Hop
Published in Playboy in June 1965, The Big Bunny Hop is a piece of pure jet-age history: a young, confident Hugh Hefner escorting ten Bunnies across an airport tarmac, photographed by Pompeo Posar as the lead image for the article that gave the picture its name. It is less a glamour shot than a document of the Playboy Club empire in its rapid ascent.
Hefner had opened the first Playboy Club in Chicago in 1960, and within a year more than fifty thousand keyholders had joined. By 1963, clubs had opened across the country, and the brand would eventually stretch from London to Osaka, drawing more than a million members to its corseted, rabbit-eared world. This image came out of a 1965 cross-country junket to inaugurate the new Los Angeles club and the Club and Hotel in Jamaica, a three-day celebration that ended with the entourage boarding a chartered flight to the Caribbean.
Newsweek captured what the clubs had become in a single phrase:
A Disneyland for adults.
In The Big Bunny Hop, Hefner walks center frame in a dark suit and tie, flanked by ten Bunnies in satin costumes of black, blue, gold, and white, ears upright, each advancing in heels across the tarmac. Behind them sits a propeller airliner under a bright, cloud-scattered sky, the red carpet underfoot. The whole image radiates a particular mid-1960s optimism: glamorous, confident, mobile, and entirely of its moment.
Photographed by Posar and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
