The Nude Marilyn I
Before she was Marilyn, she modeled for Earl Moran. Taken around 1946 and published in Playboy in January 1987, this image comes from the years when Norma Jeane Baker sat for the renowned pinup artist as a young, unknown model, long before the world knew her name.
Between 1946 and 1950, Monroe posed for Moran at roughly ten dollars an hour, with each session lasting about two hours. The photographs were not originally intended as finished portraits. Moran used them as working studies, reference images for the pastel and oil pinups he painted for Brown and Bigelow.
Moran photographed many models across his career. He singled her out:
Her movements, her hands, and her body were absolutely perfect.
In The Nude Marilyn I, she sits on the edge of a couch in striped shorts, bare from the waist up, caught mid-laugh with one hand lifted toward her hair. The frame is loose and unguarded, closer to a working session than a formal portrait, which is exactly what gives it its intimacy.
Photographed by Moran, modeled by Monroe, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
