Pirelli's Hot Dates
Published in Playboy in July 1986, Pirelli's Hot Dates is one of the most painterly and avant-garde images in the collection. Photographed by Bert Stern, the image fuses body painting, saturated color, and a painted backdrop until the model seems to dissolve into the canvas around her.
The work comes from the legendary Pirelli Calendar, the Milan tire company's famously exclusive annual, produced in limited quantities and given to select clients and VIPs rather than sold. For this project, art director Martin Walsh commissioned artists to create paintings incorporating a nude figure and a tire-tread motif, then brought Stern to an old Elizabethan hotel in the Cotswolds to photograph models within those painted worlds.
Playboy Photo Director Gary Cole placed Stern among the defining image-makers of his era:
Bert was one of the premier glamour and fashion photographers of the 1960s and 1970s.
Stern was one of the major photographers of his generation, named alongside Richard Avedon, David Bailey, and Irving Penn, and remembered above all for his famous Last Sitting photographs of Marilyn Monroe. In Pirelli's Hot Dates, the model kneels and twists within a riot of red, blue, green, yellow, and black, her painted skin merging with the surrounding composition. Eyes and forms appear across both body and canvas, turning the photograph into a single psychedelic surface: sensual, disorienting, and closer to painting than conventional glamour.
Photographed by Stern and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
