Hef on Round Bed
Published in Playboy in January 1966, Hef on Round Bed is a reportage portrait of Hugh Hefner at work on his famous revolving round bed in the original Playboy Mansion in Chicago. It is the rare image in the collection that is not a nude, but an icon: the founder alone inside the world he built.
Hefner bought the mansion at 1340 North State Parkway in Chicago's Gold Coast in 1959 and increasingly ran the magazine from home, working late into the night from the circular bed that doubled as a desk. Here he reviews photo transparencies surrounded by stacked files, manila envelopes, a freshly opened Pepsi, and the candy that fed his well-known sweet tooth.
Playboy Photo Editor Gary Cole recalled the scene with a candor that suits it:
I think they tidied up his bedroom a little before they took this picture.
In Hef on Round Bed, Hefner sits at the great circular bed-desk in a wood-paneled room, fireplace lit and framed art on the walls, the rim of the bed ringed with the apparatus of magazine-making. Photo transparencies and layouts spread before him as he works. The image reads as documentary rather than display, a record of one man and the publishing world he ran from that room.
Photographed by Larry Gordon at the Chicago Playboy Mansion and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
