Susie & Hiromi

Published by Playboy in 2003, Susie & Hiromi is an intimate two-model study by Finnish photographer Jarmo Pohjaniemi, created for the magazine's Girlfriends Special Editions. The image trades elaborate staging for chemistry: two women who already knew each other, captured in a quiet, unchoreographed moment.

The pairing was real rather than arranged. Hiromi Oshima had modeled for Playboy before and suggested working with her friend Susie Lin; Pohjaniemi photographed the ease that was already there between them. Oshima would later become the first Playboy Playmate born in Japan, while Pohjaniemi, a former model himself, brought a careful eye to gesture, styling, and atmosphere.

Pohjaniemi described the moment he caught:

It was a moment which made me hold my breath until I ran out of film.

In Susie & Hiromi, the two recline close together beneath a translucent pink parasol painted with cherry blossoms, their faces turned upward and nearly touching. Warm light, dark hair, bare skin, and the parasol's delicate radial lines turn the image into something almost painterly: a private moment softened into color, pattern, and breath.

Photographed by Jarmo Pohjaniemi and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
