She Is Ursula Andress I
Published in Playboy in June 1965, She Is Ursula Andress I returns the Swiss actress and first Bond girl to the element that made her mythic. Photographed by John Derek, the image joins Hollywood iconography with an unusually intimate photographic authorship.
Andress had already entered popular memory through Dr. No, emerging from the sea in one of the defining images of 1960s cinema. Here Derek brings her back to the water, and the echo is hard to miss: the same woman the world first saw rising from the ocean, now photographed reclining in the rush of a cascade.
Andress described her own view of nudity with characteristic clarity:
I'm not against nudity when it is used for a purpose and is done with a maximum of taste, style and class.
In She Is Ursula Andress I, she lies back in rushing water, her head tipped toward the light with eyes closed, her body half-submerged in foam as the current breaks around her. The light is warm and the mood serene, an image less of exposure than of immersion.
Photographed by Derek, modeled by Andress, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
