Models Inspecting Brake Lining

Made in Paris in 1977, Models Inspecting Brake Lining is Newton at his most dryly comic: two impeccably dressed women absorbed in the mechanical underside of a car.

The scene turns a fashion image into a small act of staged absurdity. On a dark Paris street, glamour bends toward labor, elegance toward machinery. Newton's humor is never soft; he lets the mismatch do the work, placing polished models in a context usually reserved for grease, tools, and utility.

Two impeccably dressed women absorbed in the greased underside of a car.

The result is a classic Newton inversion: fashion made stranger by competence, beauty made sharper by its collision with the ordinary.
