Le Cadre Noir

Made in Saumur in 1980, Le Cadre Noir brings Newton into the world of France's military riding academy, where uniform, horse, and fashion become part of the same disciplined spectacle.

Uniformed riders on horseback share the frame with elegantly dressed women, the scene arranged with an almost ceremonial restraint. Newton uses the academy's equestrian formality as a structure for tension: discipline against display, military order against fashion's controlled theatricality.

Newton finds the erotic inside military order and ceremony.

As the first image in a two-part Saumur group, it feels composed and anticipatory, a scene of power held just before it tips into something more provocative.

Collection Note
