La Vita Dita
An unpublished Playboy commission from December 2002, La Vita Dita is one of the collection's most unusual archival works: Marilyn Manson behind the camera, with Dita Von Teese before it.
The pairing is the point. Both figures built public identities from performance, reinvention, fetish, and persona, and the editors handed Manson the camera knowing what he and Von Teese were to each other: kindred spirits in the theater of the macabre. Hugh Hefner saw past the costume:
Underneath, they were sweet kids, easily blamed for the depravity of society.
Von Teese appears in black opera-length leather gloves against a field of darkness and peacock plumage, her skin lit sharply against the surrounding black. The composition is controlled and intimate, equal parts burlesque ritual and gothic glamour.
Conceived by Manson, modeled by Von Teese, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.
