Elsa Peretti

Newton's 1975 portrait of Elsa Peretti in New York belongs to one of his most electric collaborations: designer, model, and image-maker meeting a photographer who understood the force of all three.

Peretti appears against the Manhattan skyline in black, her body and clothing reduced to an elegant graphic line. Newton does not treat her as an accessory to the city. He makes the city answer to her, turning the skyline into a stage for a woman who would become one of modern jewelry's defining figures.

Newton on Elsa Peretti:

Very few women, apart from my wife, I go into eulogies over. But I do for Elsa.

The result is both fashion image and portrait: urban, controlled, and charged with the cool self-possession that runs through Newton's strongest work of the period.

Collection Note

Every photograph is accompanied by full documentation verifying its authenticity and origin within the authorized Newton Collection.
