David Bowie (Jail Bars)
Photographed in Monaco in 1983, this portrait places David Bowie behind iron bars, turning the musician's already constructed public image into something sharper: elegance under restraint.
Newton photographed Bowie in a disused prison outside Monte Carlo while the singer was holidaying with him. The bars give the image its structure, but also its psychology. Bowie remains composed, even theatrical, while the setting presses against him with suggestions of confinement, performance, and control.
A pop icon framed by iron, performance and confinement in the same portrait.
It is a portrait built on contradiction: star and prisoner, friend and subject, glamour and enclosure, all held inside Newton's hard black-and-white frame.
