Made in Monaco in 1983, David Bowie (in Glasses) tightens Newton's prison portrait into a concentrated study of face, wire-frame glasses, and controlled distance.
The image is derived from the same sitting as David Bowie (Jail Bars), but the crop changes the psychology. The bars and setting recede; the face becomes the field. Newton isolates Bowie's gaze and the thin geometry of the glasses, turning the portrait into an exercise in precision and persona.
Strip away the bars and the portrait becomes pure presence.
It is Bowie without spectacle, held in Newton's severe black-and-white language: constructed, contained, and impossible to read too easily.
