Charlotte Rampling

Photographed in Saint-Tropez in 1976, Newton's portrait of Charlotte Rampling places one of his key cinematic subjects in the sunlit severity of the Riviera.

Rampling stands with arms raised and gaze held at a distance, her body and face carrying the cool intelligence that made her such a natural Newton presence. The setting is bright, but the image is not soft. Newton uses the Riviera light to sharpen rather than flatter, giving the portrait its quiet tension.

Charlotte Rampling in the sunlit severity of the Riviera, beauty held at arm's length.

It belongs to the same charged Rampling collaboration as his strongest portraits of her: exposure without surrender, beauty held at arm's length.
