Behind the Curtains
Made in Paris in 1979 for French Vogue, Behind the Curtains is a draped interior study built less around clothing than atmosphere.
Two women occupy the room: one seated, one partly concealed behind curtains. Newton turns the interior into a stage of partial visibility, using fabric, shadow, and distance to make the scene feel charged without needing to explain itself. The picture belongs to his late-1970s language of rooms that behave like theatre, where the hidden figure matters as much as the one in plain view.
What is hidden becomes the composition's true subject.
The result is fashion editorial stripped down to mood: drapery, posture, secrecy, and the quiet tension of being watched.
