Photographed in Hollywood in 2004, this full-length studio portrait presents Angelina Jolie as a spare black shape against white space. A short black dress, high heels, hands set at the hips, and hair falling over one eye give the image its controlled severity.
White's own account of the sitting begins with Jolie's public image, then moves to the private interruption that changed the atmosphere of the room: her adopted son coming onto the set to see his mother.
White recalled:
She had this wonderful public persona and a crazy history of being a wild child, a solo mom, and a really strong independent woman.
That tension is visible in the picture. Jolie is photographed with almost no scenery, but the pose has the charge of a character entering a frame: self-possessed, remote, and aware of exactly how the camera will read her.
The portrait belongs to White's long record of photographing performers at the point where celebrity becomes image. Here, the theatrical surface is stripped down to a few exact decisions: black dress, white ground, strong stance, direct gaze.
