A Dam Beauty
Made in Saumur in 1980, A Dam Beauty is the bolder companion to Le Cadre Noir, set again inside the world of the French military riding academy.
A female figure appears amid the uniformed cavalry, her presence cutting through the academy's discipline and ceremony. Newton uses the formal equestrian setting as a foil, making the woman's body and posture feel sharper against the riders, uniforms, and controlled military environment.
Femininity set against ceremony and discipline, each sharpening the other.
The title's pun suits the image's tension: refinement and provocation, beauty and command, all staged inside one of France's most disciplined institutions.
