Published November 1994.

Published in Playboy in November 1994, Pamwatch is a sunlit water study of Pamela Anderson, photographed by Stephen Wayda near Saint-Tropez. No woman had been photographed for the magazine more than Anderson, and no photographer had shaped her Playboy image more than Wayda. This shoot marked a turning point in how the world would see her.

By 1994, Anderson was at the center of popular culture, known as Lisa the Tool Time Girl on Home Improvement and C.J. Parker on Baywatch, one of the most-watched television shows in the world. The title plays on that fame, but the image itself is more than a television reference. Wayda used the Saint-Tropez setting to move Anderson away from the quintessential California beach-girl persona and into something more dramatic, romantic, and cinematic.

Wayda described the transformation at the heart of the shoot:

We took her from being the quintessential California beach girl and we gave her more of a femme fatale look.

In Pamwatch, Anderson lies on her front in shallow sunlit water, propped on her forearms with her chest lifted clear of the surface, her face turned up toward the light. Long wet blonde hair falls across her shoulders, strands of beaded jewelry trailing over her skin, while one leg is raised high behind her, a beaded anklet wrapping the lifted foot. The low sun gilds her wet skin and the rippling water, the whole frame glowing amber and gold, romantic, natural, and unhurried.

Photographed by Wayda, modeled by Anderson, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

Collection Note

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner. Each print is embossed with the archive seal bearing the Playboy Bunny mark and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

Read the full history of the Playboy Legacy Collection
