Published August 1964.

Published in Playboy in August 1964, Bunnies of Chicago is a champagne-themed portrait of Cheryl Vincent in the costume that became one of the most recognizable uniforms of the twentieth century. Photographed by Stan Malinowski for a feature on the original Chicago Playboy Club, the image captures the Bunny at the height of the era that invented her.

The first Playboy Club opened at 116 East Walton Street in Chicago, with four floors designed as rooms in an imagined bachelor's world: a Playroom, a Penthouse, a Library, and a Living Room. Before the Bunny costume became iconic, Hefner had imagined waitresses in frilly nighties called Playmates, as if the magazine's centerfolds had stepped into the room. What emerged instead was the corset, tail, and ears, later completed by the collar, cuffs, and bowtie. The Bunny was born.

A Chicago Tribune recruiting ad from January 1960 set the tone:

Experience is not needed. Just be beautiful, charming and refined.

In Bunnies of Chicago, Vincent stands against a warm coral ground in the satin-blue Bunny costume, ears upright, white collar and black bowtie at her throat, cuffs at her wrists, and a bottle of Playboy Club champagne held toward the camera. Blonde, smiling, and perfectly composed, she becomes both portrait and emblem: a piece of 1960s Playboy Club history rendered as pure brand iconography.

Photographed by Malinowski, modeled by Vincent, and preserved within the Playboy Legacy Collection, the work is part of the forty-eight-print archival edition released for Playboy's 50th anniversary.

Collection Note

The Playboy Legacy Collection was released in 2007 for the magazine's 50th anniversary as a forty-eight-print archival edition curated under the direction of Hugh Hefner.
